The Best Pet-Friendly Fort Morgan Restaurants

Fort Morgan is one of the few stretches of the Alabama Gulf Coast where leashed dogs are welcome on the beach — and the restaurant scene follows suit. Whether you're winding down after a walk along the bay or fueling up before a morning at the shore, there are spots along Fort Morgan Road where your pup is just as welcome as you are.

We only include restaurants with a 4.0-star rating or higher on Google and confirmed outdoor seating where leashed dogs are welcome. Even so, pet policies can change seasonally — always call ahead before you go.

JESSE'S ON THE BAY

Rating: 4.4 Stars on Google / TripAdvisor — Ranked #33 of 136 restaurants in Gulf Shores

If there's one restaurant that locals from Gulf Shores actually drive to Fort Morgan for, it's Jesse's on the Bay. Tucked off Fort Morgan Road along the edge of Mobile Bay, this is the quieter, more refined side of the Alabama Gulf Coast dining scene.

The sister restaurant to the beloved Jesse's in Magnolia Springs (a Southern institution since 1922), Jesse's on the Bay brings the same obsession with quality ingredients to a waterfront setting with stunning sunset views over Mobile Bay. The menu centers on dry- and wet-aged steaks from Allen Brothers — the same supplier used by high-end steakhouses in Chicago and New York — alongside locally sourced Gulf seafood, including Admiral oysters harvested just a few miles down the road in Navy Cove Bay.

The restaurant is two experiences in one building. Upstairs is the white-tablecloth dining room with floor-to-ceiling bay views — ideal for a special night out. Downstairs is The Cold Hole, a casual bar and grill with a grassy outdoor deck right at the water's edge. That's where you and your leashed pup can settle in, watch the tide come in, and have a genuinely great meal without the formality. Plan for sunset. Book a table about 30 minutes before it starts. Order the smoked old fashioned.

What to Order: The Whiskey Steak (Jesse's signature, marinated with whiskey butter), anything "Magnolia Style" (steak or fish topped with fried green tomato, lump crab, and hollandaise), and the Admiral oysters on the half shell. At The Cold Hole downstairs: the shrimp and grits and the crab cake po'boy.

SASSY BASS AMAZIN' GRILL

Rating: 4.2 Stars on Google — 600+ Reviews — TripAdvisor Travelers' Choice Award

This is where the Sassy Bass empire began, and it remains the heart of the Fort Morgan dining scene. Sassy Bass Amazin' Grill has been on Highway 180 since 2013 — you'll spot it by the old school bus parked out front — and it's the kind of place that regulars claim as their own within about one visit.

The vibe is casual Gulf Coast: colorful, full bar, live music on weekends, and a covered patio with a large gravel parking lot. The menu skews adventurous for a beach joint — think jalapeno hush puppies, grilled Caesar salad (yes, grilled), gouda cheese balls, and sizzling carne asada alongside the Gulf seafood staples. The Navy Cove oysters are a must — they're harvested from the bay just two miles from where you're sitting.

Everything is made from scratch. Portions are generous. Prices are reasonable. Dogs are welcome on the covered patio. Call ahead during busy season to confirm outdoor seating availability, as the patio can fill up and may occasionally close when the restaurant hits capacity inside.

What to Order: Jalapeno hush puppies to start. The shrimp and grits. Navy Cove oysters on the half shell. The crab cake po'boy. Grilled Caesar salad. And if you're there on a live music night, get a Bushwacker at the bar.

SASSY BASS ISLAND GRILL

Rating: 4.1 Stars on Google — 180+ Reviews

Tucked into the Plantation community right on the Gulf side of Fort Morgan Road, Sassy Bass Island Grill is the place to eat when you want food and scenery in equal measure. The open-kitchen layout gives the place an airy, welcoming feel, and the outdoor seating — looking out at the Gulf — is as good as it gets for a casual meal with your dog by your side.

Unlike the Amazin' Grill's Gulf Coast comfort food approach, the Island Grill leans tropical. The menu is built around fresh, scratch-made recipes with island-inspired touches: conch patties, paella, fried red tomatoes, fresh-squeezed juices, and house-made donuts alongside Gulf seafood, hand-cut steaks, and local oysters on the half shell. Locals rave about breakfast, particularly the grilled shrimp and crab cake Island Benedict.

The restaurant is open all day, which makes it uniquely flexible. Come for breakfast before an early beach walk, stop for a quick lunch between activities, or settle in for dinner with a happy hour cocktail as the Gulf light fades. Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables.

What to Order: The grilled shrimp and crab cake Island Benedict at breakfast. The Grouper Reuben at lunch. Oysters on the half shell. Twister fries with beer cheese. And the fried plantains.

TIPS FOR DINING OUT WITH YOUR DOG IN FORT MORGAN

  1. Always call ahead. Pet policies are set by the restaurant, can vary by season, and sometimes depend on whether outdoor seating is currently being served.
  2. Keep your dog leashed at all times at outdoor dining areas — this is required by health code.
  3. Bring water. Fort Morgan summers are hot. Most restaurants won't have a dog water bowl, so pack one in your bag.
  4. Go early or late. Peak summer evenings (6-8PM) mean full patios and long waits. Arrive before 5:30PM or after the dinner rush for the smoothest experience.
  5. Avoid hot pavement. Check the ground temperature before walking to or from a restaurant. Asphalt on Fort Morgan Road gets extremely hot in summer.
  6. Know the beach rules. Fort Morgan allows leashed dogs on the bayside beach between the Engineer's Wharf and the Fort Morgan Fishing Pier. Dogs are not permitted on Gulf Shores or Orange Beach public beaches.

BEFORE OR AFTER DINNER: FORT MORGAN'S DOG-FRIENDLY BEACH

One of the biggest reasons to stay on the Fort Morgan end of the island is the beach access. While Gulf Shores and Orange Beach restrict dogs on their public beaches, Fort Morgan allows leashed dogs on the bayside beach. It's a quieter, more unspoiled stretch of coastline — exactly the kind of place where a long walk with your dog before dinner feels exactly right.
